CONCEPT & DESIGN INTENT
The project was delivered under a tight 2.5-month construction window, requiring close coordination with HKUST’s estate office and the kindergarten’s academic schedule.
Noise control, safety zoning, and material delivery within a functioning university campus posed challenges.
Through continuous collaboration between the design-build team, school management, and university engineers, the project achieved on-time completion with zero disruption to adjacent academic facilities.
SPATIAL STRATEGY
The renovation reorganized the kindergarten into three primary functional zones:
Learning & Classroom Area: flexible hexagonal tables and stackable chairs allow for group or individual learning activities.
Corridor Display Zone: transformed into an interactive gallery lined with student artwork, providing a continuous visual narrative.
Outdoor Play Terrace: designed with multicoloured rubber safety flooring and modular play equipment, seamlessly linked to the interior through sliding glass doors that enhance daylight and spatial continuity.
Visibility and supervision were key: clear sightlines allow teachers to observe children easily, while circulation routes are safe and intuitive.

MATERIALITY & DETAILING
Durability and safety dictated all material choices.
Flooring: soft vinyl and anti-slip rubber surfaces ensure impact absorption and hygiene.
Walls: washable, low-VOC paint in pastel yellow and sky blue supports a calm yet cheerful atmosphere.
Furniture: lightweight metal frames with rounded edges, ensuring stability and safety.
Lighting: energy-efficient LED fixtures deliver even brightness with reduced glare, complementing natural daylight.
Each component reflects HKUST’s institutional compliance standards, ensuring both longevity and child safety.
PROJECT GOALS & OUTCOMES
The primary objective was to create a stimulating, inclusive, and compliant early-learning environment.
Post-completion, teachers and parents reported improved engagement among children, while the new spatial organization enhanced teaching flexibility.
The project successfully balanced aesthetic warmth with functional discipline, meeting all building, fire, and hygiene regulations mandated by HKUST’s facilities management office.
