CONCEPT & DESIGN INTENT

The design objective was to create a learning environment that is not limited to one fixed mode of use, but able to shift between study, discussion, presentation and student engagement.

The Vibrance Hub was developed as a technology-supported academic space within Ho Sik Yee Library.

The project responds to the changing role of university libraries. A contemporary library is no longer only a place for silent reading or individual study. It also needs to support group work, digital content, informal teaching, multimedia presentation and social learning.

For this reason, the design strategy focused on flexibility and visual clarity.

The three LED wall zones become the main digital infrastructure of the space. They allow the library to display visual content, presentation materials, academic information or student-facing media. Instead of treating technology as an add-on, the LED walls are fully integrated into the spatial composition, forming part of the identity of the Vibrance Hub.

The ceiling lighting was carefully arranged in long, linear runs to reinforce the depth of the room and create a stronger sense of direction. This linear rhythm helps organize the large open space visually, while providing sufficient brightness for study and discussion.

The warm indirect lighting above the feature wall panels softens the overall atmosphere. It gives the space a more refined visual layer and prevents the technology-focused design from feeling too cold or institutional.

The flooring also plays an important role.

A grey carpet tile base provides a calm and practical foundation, while blue and green accent tiles introduce movement and energy. These colours help create a more youthful and engaging environment, suitable for a university setting, but they remain controlled enough to preserve the quiet and focused character of a library.

The overall concept can be described as a vibrant academic hub with technology, flexibility and visual rhythm at its core.

SPATIAL STRATEGY / PLANNING LOGIC

The space was planned to support different learning behaviours within one open environment, allowing students to move naturally between individual study, group work and presentation-oriented activities.

The Vibrance Hub is arranged as a flexible shared learning area rather than a fixed classroom or conventional reading room.

The furniture layout supports multiple modes of use. Movable student chairs and collaborative tables allow the space to be rearranged according to different group sizes and activities. Students can use the area for casual study, small group discussion, peer learning or short presentations.

The open-plan configuration creates visual connectivity across the space.

This is important for a library learning hub, as the area needs to feel accessible and inviting, while still maintaining a sense of order. The placement of seating, LED wall zones and circulation routes helps the space remain open and easy to navigate.

The large feature walls act as spatial anchors.

They provide a clear visual focus and give the room a stronger identity. These walls are not only display surfaces, but also help define different activity zones within the larger open area.

The high-back acoustic seating elements introduce a degree of enclosure within the open plan.

They offer students a more focused setting for semi-private discussion or individual work, while still remaining part of the overall learning environment. This creates a useful balance between openness and concentration.

Natural light from the windows, together with the refreshed lighting system, helps make the space feel brighter and more comfortable. Window film and roller blinds allow better control of daylight, glare and user comfort, especially when LED walls or presentation content are in use.

Overall, the planning approach allows the Vibrance Hub to function as a flexible academic platform — not just a room with furniture, but a space that can adapt to different teaching, learning and engagement needs.

MATERIALITY & DETAILING

The material palette combines practical durability with a more energetic academic character, using carpet pattern, lighting rhythm, feature wall treatment and flexible furniture to create a contemporary learning environment.

The Vibrance Hub uses a clear and functional material strategy.
The grey carpet tile base provides a neutral foundation suitable for a library environment. It helps reduce visual noise and supports acoustic comfort, while remaining durable for high student traffic.
Blue and green accent carpet tiles are inserted into the floor pattern to introduce movement and vibrancy. These colours add energy to the space without becoming too visually dominant. They also help the floor plane feel more active and connected to the idea of a modern student hub.
The large feature wall panels form the main visual backdrop of the space.
Their dark surface provides strong contrast against the brighter ceiling and wall finishes, allowing the LED wall zones and presentation content to stand out clearly. Bronze-tone framing details and warm lighting add depth and refinement, giving the walls a more architectural presence.
Linear ceiling lights are used to create order and direction.
Rather than relying on scattered lighting points, the long linear arrangement strengthens the sense of continuity across the space. It also provides a clean, contemporary expression that aligns with the technology-supported nature of the project.
Warm indirect lighting above the feature wall panels adds a softer visual layer.
This detail is important because the space includes a significant amount of technology. The warm light helps balance the LED wall elements and prevents the room from becoming too harsh or overly technical.
Flexible furniture supports different patterns of use.
Movable chairs, group tables and semi-enclosed acoustic seating booths allow students to use the space in different ways throughout the day. The bright chair colours also reinforce the energetic identity of the Vibrance Hub.
Window film and roller blinds provide practical control over daylight, glare and privacy.
These elements are especially important in a space that uses LED display walls and multimedia presentation. They allow the library team to manage lighting conditions depending on the type of activity taking place.
The overall material and detailing approach is practical, contemporary and student-focused.
It does not rely on decorative excess. Instead, the design uses lighting, carpet pattern, wall treatment, technology and furniture flexibility to create a learning space that feels active, clear and highly usable.

PROJECT GOALS & OUTCOMES

The completed Vibrance Hub gives HKMU a refreshed, flexible and visually engaging learning space that reflects the University’s forward-looking approach to student experience and campus facilities.

The key objective was to transform an existing library area into a more contemporary and adaptable learning environment.

The completed space now supports individual study, group learning, multimedia presentation, informal collaboration and student engagement. It gives the library a more flexible platform for both daily learning activities and special academic uses.

The three LED wall zones significantly enhance the functionality of the space.

They allow the library to present digital content in a more dynamic way, supporting teaching, briefing, visual communication and student-facing activities. This makes the Vibrance Hub more than a conventional study area; it becomes a technology-enabled learning platform.

The new lighting, carpet pattern, feature wall treatment and seating arrangement create a stronger visual identity.

The space feels open, bright and contemporary, while still maintaining the calm and practical qualities needed in a library. The balance between vibrancy and control is central to the success of the project.

The completed Vibrance Hub has been well received by the client and library stakeholders.

It now provides HKMU with a highly usable and engaging academic environment — one that supports modern learning behaviour and reflects the University’s continued investment in student experience, technology and campus facilities.

For Enoch Deco, this project demonstrates how an institutional interior can be transformed through careful coordination of design, technology and construction detail.

It is not only a fitting-out project, but a spatial upgrade that brings together learning flexibility, digital infrastructure and a more vibrant academic identity.

COLLABORATION & CONSTRAINTS

The main challenge was to integrate multiple building services and digital systems into an existing library environment while maintaining a clean, coordinated and maintainable final result.

The project involved more than interior finishes.

A significant part of the work was the coordination of building services and technology systems, including LED wall installation, lighting control, AV integration, CCTV, access control, MVAC adjustment, fire services modification, power and data provisions, ceiling works, window film and roller blinds.

The LED walls were one of the most important technical elements.

Their installation required careful coordination of power, data, structure, wall finishes and AV control. The display zones needed to appear visually integrated, not simply attached to the space as equipment.

Lighting coordination was another key requirement.

The linear ceiling lighting had to work with the existing ceiling grid, air diffusers, fire services and other building services. The final arrangement needed to be clean and consistent, while still delivering suitable brightness for learning activities.

The ceiling works required close attention to existing conditions.

Because the project was carried out within an existing library environment, ceiling panels, services, lighting routes and equipment locations all had to be coordinated carefully. The design intent needed to align with practical site constraints.

MVAC adjustment and air diffuser coordination were also important.

The completed space needed to remain comfortable for students during extended periods of study, discussion and presentation. Mechanical services therefore had to be coordinated with the new ceiling and lighting arrangement.

The works also had to respect the operational nature of the library.

As the project was located inside an academic facility, construction planning, access, noise, safety and handover requirements had to be managed carefully. The final outcome needed to be visually refined, technically reliable and practical for long-term maintenance.

This project demonstrates Enoch Deco’s ability to coordinate interior design, building services, technology integration and fit-out execution within a live institutional environment.
