Fishholic is a young and vibrant concept restaurant in Tin Hau, specializing in innovative fish-based cuisine. Designed for a youthful entrepreneur whose family background lies in the food business, this debut outlet blends urban minimalism with a playful palette of aquatic tones and textures.
The design captures freshness through a clean teal façade, neon typography, and subtle geometric flooring transitions that evoke movement and flow—mirroring the essence of water and seafood. Despite its compact footprint, the interior delivers a refreshing dining experience that feels modern, inviting, and finely crafted.
Since its opening, Fishholic has garnered growing recognition and was later awarded one Michelin star, marking its ascent as one of Hong Kong’s notable new culinary destinations.

CONCEPT & DESIGN INTENT
Fishholic was conceived as a fresh and youthful F&B concept centered on the creative reinterpretation of fish-based cuisine. The brand’s founder—a young entrepreneur from a family with deep roots in the food industry—envisioned a space that breaks away from the traditional seafood restaurant aesthetic. Instead, the design celebrates modern simplicity with a playful aquatic spirit.
The intention was to create a visual narrative centered on freshness, clarity, and motion. The architectural expression combines coastal tones, streamlined geometry, and subtle neon highlights to evoke the rhythm and vitality of the ocean—aligning with Fishholic’s innovative culinary philosophy.
SPATIAL STRATEGY / PLANNING LOGIC
Given its compact 1,000 sqft footprint, the spatial planning focused on clarity, flow, and interaction. The entrance corner, with its teal façade and glowing signage, acts as a strong urban marker visible from the street. Inside, the spatial sequence transitions smoothly from the takeaway counter to the dine-in bar zone, creating a dynamic sense of progression.
A combination of high stools, shared bar seating, and perimeter counters promotes flexibility and social energy, while maintaining spatial efficiency. Each visual corridor is carefully aligned to frame focal points—such as the neon fish symbol or textured feature walls—reinforcing both brand recognition and depth of perspective.

MATERIALITY & DETAILING
The design language relies on an interplay of texture, reflection, and contrast.
The teal-painted exterior wall and backlit logo signage establish immediate visual identity.
Inside, white-tiled counters meet warm wood-tone flooring and geometric hexagonal tiles that merge naturally, suggesting the flow between land and sea.
Concrete finishes and matte metallic furniture provide balance against the vibrancy of colored light.
The neon art piece, depicting a fish held in a beaker, serves as both an icon and a metaphor for experimentation, creativity, and culinary precision.
Lighting was key: soft washes, concealed lines, and accent pendants create an atmosphere that feels both experimental and approachable.

COLLABORATION & CONSTRAINTS
The collaboration between the young client and our design team was marked by experimentation and trust. Working within a modest budget and limited timeline, both sides shared a forward-looking mindset that prioritized authenticity and creativity.
Close coordination with kitchen consultants and signage fabricators ensured functional integration—especially for ventilation, lighting, and branding visibility. The success of Fishholic laid the foundation for continued partnerships with emerging food and beverage entrepreneurs and demonstrated how design can transform an ambitious idea into an award-winning reality.
