CONCEPT & DESIGN INTENT

Torcharm embodies the vibrant spirit of Thai street culture, modernized through a clean and youthful lens. The restaurant captures the essence of Bangkok’s floating markets — dynamic, colorful, and full of sensory detail — while maintaining a contemporary minimalism suited to a Hong Kong mall context.
The name “Torcharm” (船皇) suggests a “royal boat” — symbolizing both Thai culinary heritage and a sense of approachable sophistication.

SPATIAL STRATEGY / PLANNING LOGIC

The layout prioritizes openness and visual continuity, emphasizing a casual, social dining experience.
A central communal table anchors the space, framed by suspended rope lights and modular shelving. The perimeter seating features booth banquettes and two-person tables, ensuring flexibility for both group and solo diners.
At the entrance, a full-scale Thai Tuk-tuk serves as a signature attraction, instantly setting the tone of playful authenticity.

MATERIALITY & DETAILING

The material palette merges warm natural tones with splashes of saturated color:

Walls: hand-trowelled plaster with matte texture and subtle relief.
Accent Elements: half-boat wall sculptures, glazed ceramic plates, and bold orange & blue upholstery echo Thai craftsmanship.
Lighting: pendant fixtures wrapped in coarse rope introduce a handmade, tactile warmth.
Flooring: patterned tiles reminiscent of Thai courtyard motifs.
Together, these materials create a space that feels both crafted and youthful, rooted in Thai tradition yet interpreted through modern detailing.

PROJECT GOALS & OUTCOMES

The project aimed to translate the authentic Thai street-food atmosphere into a mall setting. The outcome achieved:

Strong thematic coherence between branding and interior design.
Visual distinctiveness within the competitive F&B zone of Tai Po Mega Mall.
Customer recognition through playful yet elegant iconography (boats, tuk-tuk, handcrafted lighting).
Torcharm successfully became a flagship store, establishing the client’s visual identity for future branch rollouts.

COLLABORATION & CHALLENGES

Working closely with the client’s Thailand-based team, design references were sourced from both Bangkok floating markets and Thai modern cafés. Coordination was required to balance authentic Thai elements with Hong Kong’s regulatory standards and spatial constraints.
Despite a compact two-month schedule, the team delivered on time, ensuring that all thematic décor — from handcrafted signage to imported tuk-tuk elements — aligned perfectly with the design intent.
